Transformational gift to Cleveland Clinic supports research facilities in Ohio, Florida, and establishes endowed chair

The gift from the United Arab Emirates will advance cancer and pathogen research globally.

The United Arab Emirates has made a transformational gift to accelerate research in cancer and pathogens at Cleveland Clinic. It was made in the name of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, who is the mother of H.H. The President Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and considered "mother of the nation."

The funds will help support advances in innovation, research, education and training within Cleveland Clinic's Global Center for Immunotherapy & Precision Immuno-Oncology, Global Center for Pathogen & Human Health Research and Florida Research & Innovation Center.

Dr. Timothy Chan Appointed to the Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Endowed Chair in Cancer Immunotherapy

Timothy Chan, MD, PhD, director of the Global Center for Immunotherapy & Precision Immuno-Oncology, has been appointed the inaugural holder of the Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Endowed Chair.

With this gift, the center will advance cancer research, including immunotherapy cancer research, in Cleveland, Florida and the Middle East, establishing a foundation for patients to have access to the latest and best treatments, from early to late stages of disease.

Dr. Chan is a world-renowned immuno-oncology expert and pioneer in cancer genomics. He founded and leads the Global Center for Immunotherapy & Precision Immuno-Oncology, a state-of-the-art center focused on advancing research and treatment in the rapidly growing field of cancer immunotherapy. Dr. Chan and his team are dedicated to advancing personalized immune-based therapies, an approach that analyzes an individual patient's unique situation to match them to the most effective immunotherapy. The center is also innovating new genomic approaches and expediting discoveries out of the laboratory for patients.

The Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Global Center for Pathogen & Human Health Research

The gift will also support research in pathogens and virology at the Global Center for Pathogen & Human Health Research and Florida Research & Innovation Center at Cleveland Clinic.

In honor of the gift, the Global Center for Pathogen & Human Health Research, will be named the Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Global Center for Pathogen & Human Health Research. A new research facility to be constructed in the Cleveland Innovation District will also be recognized as the Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Global Pathogen Research Center. The center is led by Jae Jung, PhD, an internationally renowned authority in virology and virus-induced cancers, known for his groundbreaking work in the field of emerging pathogens.

The gift also supports the Florida Research & Innovation Center, located in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The center is led by scientific director Michaela Gack, PhD, a renowned virology expert who has an extensive background in microbiology and infectious disease.

These newly named resources and facilities will enable trainees and partners from United Arab Emirates to collaborate with Cleveland Clinic's top leaders in cancer, virology, genomics and drug development, fostering hands-on training and education, and leading to seamless global operational integration.
